 Ligatures...

Here we go...
What ligatures do prefer (in certain settings, of course)? What kind of tone, response, etc. do you think they result in? I have my own opinions on different materials and models, but I'd like to hear some other opinions. :)

I'm not entirely sure if the material of the ligature itself it too important as long as the material that touches the reed is rigid and in contact with less rather than more surface area of the reed. I have gone through a phase enjoying the Floating Rail Ligature of late that is a high tech version of the old Bonade idea - two parallel, longitudinal bars that only hold the center of the reed avoiding the very edges. I've also just gone back to the Vandoren Leather with the metal plate (also a pseudo Bonade design) and still find this a great ligature.

The other aspect which is intriguing is that if you just barely tighten so that you maximize the reed's ability to vibrate, you marginalize the overall effect of whatever ligature you are using (take the material/design out of the equation as it were).

After trying 4 types of Vandoren ligatures with all existing plates, Parachos wooden lig, some handmade leather ligs, 4 types from Rovner, and one floating rail, plus old stock Buffet and Selmer ligs, several BG ligs, my evaluation is:

1. Rovner Versa (with metal plate, flappers down)
2. Floating Rail
3. Vandoren Leather (with metal plate)
4 Parachos (not bad, but very expensive) Rovner Dark (cheap but not so good as the Versa)

5. Others...
