 Beethoven Clarinet and Bassoon
Author: Amanda Rose
Date:   2001-01-29 20:30

A friend and I read that Beethoven has a duet for Clarinet and Bassoon. Since we play these two instruments, respectively, we are looking to play possibly as a special ensemble for Solo and Enensemble.

What's it's name and Opus #?

Is it difficult?

Would it be Class A (hardest class)?

Anywhere on the Net where we could order it?

Thanks,
Amanda Rose

With all the tools available to today's high school students -- espcially via the Internet -- it never ceases to amaze me how many folks want quick fix answers without even starting to do their homework. Sorry for being so mean, but it would take you all of about 2 minutes to answer all your own questions. You do have a computer connected to the Internet, don't you?

Don,
I find your reply to be very mean spirited! Amanda is asking us a reasonable question and you go and post a very cynical reply. Two minutes to get the answer...yeah right! She seems to be an intelligent person, and she probably can get the answer, but not in two minutes. Get real, guy! The reason for this board is to post questions and receive answers. Unfortunately I do not know the answer...do you? If you do, post the answer. Just don't give us a wise ass remark!

Gary

I forgot - according to the grading system used grade 3 = med. easy and grade 5 = medium difficult. Check with your music director to see which level meets both of your playing levels comfortably.

You can also order this piece through www.jeanne-inc.com.
They have 9 pieces listed for clarinet/bassoon in the catalog they sent me. The Beethoven Duos through them are about $9.00. It does not say how difficult the pieces are. They also probably have it at sheetmusicplus.com. However, to put it nicely, they really suck as far as customer service. It took 5 months and a lot of e-mails and phone calls to figure out what happened to a couple of orders I sent.

Hope this helps!

Todd

These are fun pieces and not too difficult. I seem to remember that recent scholarship has determined that they were probably not written by Beethoven - perhaps by Baermann. Anyone out there have further insight?

They're widely available by numerous publishers - the set I have is published by Doblinger.

I must admit I have some sympathy with Don Gross's response. While Amanda's questions are reasonable, too many people use the internet for quick and easy answers for school research. I think we are developing lazy intellectual habits as a result.

Thank you for your responses. I HAD done some searches and come up with nothing. I just know it exists because there is a duet in the yellow Clarinet duet books that is based on it.

I found a few things in a later search on an Amazon search just for the title. So I know Beethoven has one. It's Three Duos in F, I believe. I'm going to have to call WSMA and find out if we can play it as special category, because it is not found anywhere on the list. I'll probably see if I can order it from my music store.

Thanks
Amanda Rose

Amanda, did you ever think to check the composition section here? They're available by composer, number of instruments, or by instrumentation - it took me 22 seconds to find the piece and the publishers of the piece when I searched for 2 instruments, clarinet & bassoon.

Amanda, the three duos are without opus (sadly they are probably not by Beethoven), they are in the keys of C, F and Bb. I have a copy of the 1st duo published by Osterrichischer Budesverlag OBV 6781,41 (order by this #?)
I also have a copy of the 1st duo by Edward B. Marks Music Corp. 12577-14, in this version, the Clarinet part is not transposed, but there is a transposed part (as well as original) for the basoon (to Bb). I find the 3rd the most fun to play and as the clarinet plays in "C" it may fall under the fingers more easily than the others.
They are sweet pieces and fun to play, I recommend them.
