I suppose you've heard this a million times, but if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I have to get a clarinet for grandson, 2yr band. Last year I rented him one, but now I want to buy for obvious reasons. I do not want to spend a fortune (he's 13). Amazon has a "Conductor" for $100 with decent reviews. Ebay has a Buffet Bb 12 from China (I read Buffet makes them in China), and it's a knockoff but for $39 ($80) shipping it might be worth it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest neither the Conductor nor the knock-off "Buffet".
There are many thousands of good used student instruments from reputable manufacturers available. I suggest you check http://www.clarinuts.com and examine the Vito 7214 and Yamaha YCL-20 instruments available for sale. The Vito 7214 can be had for under $200, delivered. I own a Vito 7214 and it is a decent clarinet.

You don't want any of these.
You better get your grandson a used Bundy, Vito, Yamaha, Jupiter, B&H or Buffet (original?) plastic instrument. These most often serve(d) as reliable school rental instruments, are sturdy and reasonably well in tune and can actually be repaired if something goes wrong. Stay away from knockoffs and fantasy brands.
What you save when buying one of those cheapies you'll spend twice or three times upon your first touch-up. You may also want to ring up your grandson's instructor to hear his/her opinion and recommendations.
(Don't forget to add a good mouthpieces such as the Fobes Debut. Nothing worse than a good instrument with a bad beak)

And even then it may never play well. What about the place you were renting from? If you have a credit from the rental payments, you may be able to work something out with them on a purchase. Most companies that do rent-to-own also sell their used stock at sometimes (depending on the company) good prices.

A used Yamaha YCL-20 or the updated YCL-250, for example, can be had for as little as $250 on sites like clarinuts.com. Another site is frannytoo.com. Both advertise on this Web site and have proved to be reliable.
I think it's fair to say that you won't get anything for $100 from an auction site that works or plays well...at least not for very long.
