 My clarinet wont play!
Author: Keeheon Nam

Hey all.. I was just practicing this morning and about 25-30 minutes in I suddenly could not play the lower octaves from middle C and down to the E... I looked for about ten minutes for pad leaks or any things inside my clarinet and I can not find anything wrong... Can you please help?

I have a E11 Clarinet from Buffet bought around 2 years ago.

Any tips or suggestions will help!

Thanks,
Keeheon

**Correction**

The notes do play, but not in the lower octave... It just plays like I have the thumb key with it.

I have not dropped it ever and there are no spit bubbles...

First check the G# & A keys at the top of the instrument. When pressing the A key there should be a slight amount of movement before the G# moves if not turn the adjusting screw small amounts counter clockwise until there is. Are any keys, especially the side E flat/B flat, bent & catching on adjacent ones causing a pad to stay open?

Check if you have a sticking register key. Could be binding, or a loose or missing pad or a broken or mispositioned spring on that key.

You have an air leak, probably on a pad somewhere on the upper joint. A couple of those pads are hard to 'see' wether they seat or not, might have to use small pieces of thin paper, etc. to see if the closed pad holds the paper (seals) all the way around. Try a suction test on the upper joint, with all holes covered, and your palm over the end.

Might also be a cork leak on mpc, bbl., or middle joint.
