Can anyone tell me how to get started in restoring/reparing wooden Clarinets, most importantly, Buffet Clarinets? I've always wanted to learn, and I thought that there had to be some kind of books out there, or other kind of resource. Any kind of information would be helpful. Thanks!

I had the same desire. So a few months ago I contacted a repair person who does a lot of the repair in the Portland Me. area and arranged to have him set down with me for a couple of hours and go through some of the basics and point me in the right direction. I paid him the same hourly rate that he got when he did repair work.
I also play Buffets and have some real old,1860, clarinets sets that I want to bring back to prestine condition. I still have a Lot to learn but feel that I now have a much better idea how to go about it.

Order the Brand Repair Manual from Feree's tools (linked on sneezy). Go on ebay, and win a bid for something of questionable quality and restore it. Good training practice and better than practicing on your good horn. You can always sell it when you finish fixing it up.

There's also some detailed info on the web about how to replace pads, etc. I don't have the URL anymore, but if you go to a search engine like www.excite.com and search for "musical instrument repair" or similar, you can find it w/o too much trouble.
I second the advice about buying something cheap on ebay to learn on. I restored an old silver King, which sounds great, and now I'm attempting my wooden Normandy. It's pretty satisfying when you finally get it working the way you want. Good luck!

I ordered a brand new Brand Manual "Bible" form Ferre's yesterday, and I picked up a 1945 Selmer for $120 for my horrible experiments. "She's alive! ALIVE!" - NOW I'm excited! We'll see how it goes.
