I recently picked up a lovely Albert system clarinet in A. It's stamped with the Carl Fischer name, but I was wondering if anyone here knew who the actual manufacturer was. The key work is very German looking to me - there is a right handed C# for example. Preufer? Penzel? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The keywork looks vaguely "Penzel-Mueller-ish" to me, and some circumstantial evidence (discussed in a few other threads) leads me to believe that P-M did make clarinets for their New York neighbors Carl Fischer, so that would be my guess. Just a guess, though.

I believe this horn is a Carl Fischer American from around 1933. I don't know who made it but I suspect it may be a Buffet stencil. The touchpiece on the C#/G# key is a bit unusual and doesn't look very german to me. It doesn't look like PM either but looks just like Buffet alberts from that time. Like Dave said - just a guess.

In those early years of the 20th century, a lot of clarinets were made in a "cottage industry" style in home workshops with no names attached. Sometimes just certain parts were made in a home workshop and were sold to name makers. While it would be difficult to attach a name to this instrument, one could look at book photos for makers with this kind of unusual C#/G# key. Buffet is certainly possible. Good luck!

Thanks for the input! Klarina.gr has the biggest collection of alberts that I have found online. I dug through about 100 pictures of Buffets but only found one with a rh C#, and not one with the extra Ab. Otherwise the keywork is similar to a few of the Buffet horns pictured there. The only horn that had both unusual features was a Selmer. Regardless of pedigree - it is a very sweet instrument - it played straight from the case, and I'm very much looking forward to playing it after I'm done restoring:)
