We're playing this concerto this week. The conductor's score has only oboes, bassoons, and horns but parts were also handed out for ad libitum clarinets, trumpets, and tympani. I checked the NMA and the extra parts are included in their score but in very small notes. From what I could understand of the essay in German there was nothing about why there are two versions. ¿Does anyone have any other information about this piece?

I could only guess, and it is a guess, that the second edition was done later by the publisher or an editor. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I'm sorry - your guess is wrong.
Mozart actually added these parts for a performance in Vienna.
Be careful: the Barenreiter edition has a few wrong notes in the first movement.

Damn, wrong again but I told you it was only a guess. I thought Mozart told me he wasn't going to use clarinets in that concerto. He lied to me. ESP
