Last night's Jazz program on PBS had a segment on Duke Ellington's early years. What made my eyes bug out was a picture of a fellow blowing on a bass clarinet -- Wilbur Sweatman. Duke played with him after moving from D.C. to New York City. The program gave Sweatman a mere two sentences.
I'd sure like to know more about Sweatman, especially his bass clarinet playing. According to the brief web search I've made, he was best known as a vaudeville performer who played three Bb clarinets at one time.
Check out this link for a photo of him playing three horns at once and a little bio: http://www.redhotjazz.com/Sweatman.html
I think the above page may have spelled his first name wrong. Every other reference I found spelled it Wilbur.

How 'bout Sidney Bechet's playing the sarrusaphone with Louis and Clarence Williams on a recording in 1924? "Mandy, make up your mind"
