Hi. I'm going to listen to Eddie Daniels play this Saturday at Music Hall in Cincinnati. They have a thing called classical conversations before the concert where you get to talk to the guest for the night. I GET TO TALK TO EDDIE DANIELS.... or at least ask him a question. Problem?! I don't know what to ask or even say. I don't want to make a fool of myself.
So, does anyone have any suggestions on what to ask/ say?!?!

Eddie's a real personable guy - I had dinner with him kind of by accident this summer (I was having dinner with Ben Armato & friends, and Eddie Daniels and Ricardo Morales joined us . Not intimidating at all. You might want to ask him something about his blending of jazz & classical music, as he did with the Vivaldi. He's got some interesting ideas and insights about that.

Ask him how often he turns over his horns and if his favorite horn is actually a Concerto. Perhaps he's due to turn one over now ,maybe it could be you

He really plays a Concerto. I was talking to Eddie while Francois Kloc of Buffet repadded his Concerto!

My guess is the Concerto he plays is not the same one you'd get from WDWND and BRSWND and it's perhaps the only Concerto padded by Francois, Ne c'est pas?

You'd be wrong. It's as stock as any professional's horn - it's adjusted well and often, that's all. They select their horns like you would - they play a bunch until they find one they like.
Francois would adjust your horn and repad it, too - he did my son's Festivals. These people are a lot more accessible than you think!

I don't know much about his background, so I would be
curious if he started out with classical training before
entering jazz. I wonder if there was pressure put on him
in the early jazz years to switch to soprano sax.

Actually, I'm pretty sure he started out professionally as a tenor saxophonist (and a darned good one). He still plays tenor as well as clarinet.

I'd love to know his thoughts on why bass clarinet isn't more prominent commercially, in concert or in recordings as a jazz instrument (in other words, why aren't there more Eric Dolphys out there?).

I and anyone I know who's email or talked to Mr. Kloc have never had any real trouble getting hold of him. The email could have been accidentally deleted - you never know. Did you ever follow up with another?

The last time (And only ... but it sounds so much more ... oh ... important..LOL) I saw Eddie Daniels was about 7 years ago in LA at the Namm Show. He was still playing on a Buffet Clarinet and sounding ..MMMmmmmmm good!! B.& H. invited me to a privet party... very small.. I would say no more than 30 people ... to a hotel suite . and there was Eddie... playing no more than 4' away, and for what seemed forever... I was in heaven! What a player! (As if I have to say that..) I also found him to be a truly fine gentelman. He ansswered all my silly "lets make conversation" questions with charm and grace. I was most intrested in his barrel.. an Accu-bore he was trying out. If I had one question now ... it would be ... "If you had it all to do over again... would you focus more on clarinet, flute, sax piano???Whatever???" Have fun!!!

I'm not sure how this discussion about Mr. Kloc ended up on the Eddie Daniels thread, but I must add that I've had the same experience Paul has. I've sent Mr. Kloc a handful of emails over the last several months, and never received even the most perfunctory of responses. I know they weren't accidentally deleted, because I sent them from my AOL address to his, and it allows you to check the status of when they were opened, and they were all received and opened. I have no doubt that he's a very busy man, but I do think some sort of response was in order, even if it was a brief "sorry, but I am unable to answer at this time."

Please don't be too quick to assume he deliberately (or negligently) ignored you. M. Kloc was very active on the sneezy.org e-list for a long time and answered a great many questions. My guess is that he probably received a ton of e-mail and that keeping track of it probably got difficult. I don't get huge amounts of e-mail, yet I know I've lost people's mail despite what I thought would be a highly efficient system of organizing it. Often I lose it because when I save it to disk, I absent-mindedly use the code I'm supposed to use for "sent" mail instead of "received" mail. Sometimes something will turn up weeks later -- oops!
