Hi, I'm Trevor. I'm 14, a freshman in high school. I'm 3rd clarinet in my band, which from what they say, is good because most freshman start out on 3rd, I play all 1st I've done my county's junior honors band for the 3 years I was eligible. My first year (6th grade) I got 5th chair out of 25. I was the only 6th grader! My next to years I got first chair clarinet. And just last year, I wont the scholarship award for being the best musician in my age group, in the county! This year in high school, I tried out for high school honors band. I got 8th chair out of the 22 they picked and 30 auditioned. I was so honored as freshman usually dont make it. I beat our school's 1st chair clarinet :D I play in the school's band, Pep Band (we play at the football games and basketball games; like a marching band but we don't march), the local community band and the school's orchestra for their musicals. Music is my life hahaha.
I can play a lot of instruments. I play Bb clarinet mainly, but I also play alto sax, tenor sax, oboe, piano and the recorder (I know, the recorder is simple but I had to re-learn it from 3rd grade last year for a native American ensemble. It was fun doubling in the piece!)
I play on a F.E. Olds Semi-Professional Grenadilla wood clarinet, using vandoren #3 reeds. I just got this clarinet 7 months ago and I love it! It was a definite step-up from playing on my cheap-o student plastic clarinet for almost 5 years. So, sorry for the rant but that's me. The forum seems great and I'm happy to be here!

Glad you found this board. There are a lot of people pretty much like you here. If you hang around for a while, you'll probably learn things you didn't know you needed to know.

Hi Trevor....just dropping by to say "Hi" after eating too much on Thanksgiving Day. I was "re-living" my early Band days recently as a result of being contacted by an ol buddy and your post kept me there. Your use of the phrase "music is my life" made me laugh because my wife chides me about my use of it. Best of luck to you. Bob

Welcome to the boards, Trevor! You'll find loads of great information here, and if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! There are no stupid questions. lol.
I'm one of those people who play a massive selection of instruments as well, so I can truly relate in that department.
And congratulations on your clarinet achievements so far. Keep practicing and enjoy!

Welcome, Trevor. You have plenty of company among the doublers here. Recorder may seem simple to a 3rd grader, but now that you know more about music, I'll bet you discovered some new challenges in that instrument. That's how it went with me, anyway!

Nice to meet you. We're both fairly young members of this board (I'm not sure the age of the youngest posters, but some of the older people have been playing longer than I've been alive and it's great to pick everyone's brains here). I've been playing for 21 years (I turned 30 this year), and I never stopped enjoying it. Hopefully, you enjoy it for years to come as well. I currently play clarinet II/utility clarinet/alto sax in a community orchestra; I enjoy it very much.
I have a question for you. About a year ago, I was discussing some fingering something-or-other with the 2nd oboist in the community orchestra I play in. I play a little (very little) oboe. We were talking (I think) about some of the fingerings that didn't make as much sense to me as a clarinet player (the forked F, the Bb fingering that I don't even remember right now but it was bizarre to me, and some others). She said that an oboe is like a recorder that had a bunch of keys added to it. How similar are the oboe and recorder? I've never played recorder (transferred to a public school too late in my 3rd grade year to start), so I don't know anything about those fingerings. I'm just curious.

Oh yeah, my doublings include alto sax, flute, piccolo, and (very very little haven't touched one in a couple years so I can't do much with it) oboe. I play clarinets from Eb to bass (I'm playing Eb, Bb, and bass in our upcoming holiday concerts. The one piece where we would've needed our A's got scratched; the 3 of us were happy about that). I can pick out just the required amount of piano to get through the 2 required classes in college.

I honestly think that the Viennese oboe is closer to recorder fingerings than the normal oboe that is used today, but even then, they're not that similar in my opinion. At least not anymore similar than recorders are with all of the other woodwinds.
