Apartment building is infested and yes this is a living hell. I am trying to assess some of my options if I move out. Needless to say, I don't want any coming with me. Vikane gas fumigation appears to be safe for musical instruments whereas heat treatment is not. Unfortunately, Vikane is not effective in the winter months if you live in a cold climate. Any ideas what to do with my clarinets if I go with the heat treatment so I don't have to wait until spring to move? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Having read up on the subject recently, due to living in the bedbug capitol of the US, I offer my deepest condolences and best wishes for a speedy deliverance.

Thanks for the good thoughts and wishes. The cases are not really the problem as they can be treated separately and will survive the heat. It's the horns themselves that I am worried about.

If your clarinet is plastic, put it in the freezer for a few hours. If its wood, dunno!

I remember being told that putting your clarinet in a refrigerator for a while won't really hurt the instrument as long as you let it become room temperature before playing it. That's what been recommended when one can't get their clarinet apart. I'm not sure about the freezer though. I know sometimes when we tour in the winter and our "heated truck" seems not to work too well our instruments arrive very cold. I just let them sit out for half an hour before playing them and have never had a problem. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

what do you mean what to do with your clarinets? taking them out of the room will suffice.....but to tell you the truth your bed bug situation is becoming a bigger problem in the USA than most people are aware of....have you considered sealing in your mattress? It should help.

I'm just waiting for someone to tell you to play "Stranger on the Shore" as it will drive even bedbugs away. On a positive note I don't think you have to worry about your clarinet but the cold treatment mentioned above should work as bbs are killed by both excessive cold and heat. Information I received from an entimolygist(sp)
is that "they" are entering the country in foreign made clothing shipments.
