I have limited Eb time and have picked one up again as a lark only to find that I need to struggle and strain to achieve pitch. Knowing that I would not do this on a Bb under any circumstances I was wondering just what is a standard Eb barrel length.
Mine is 44mm (ish). Is 40mm out of the question?

I think it differs with what model Eb you have? What are you playing?
My buffet RC Prestige has a 41.5mm if that helps.

The lengths are "all over the map"; and the bores can vary greatly, also.
Most that I make are in the 42mm range , but I have made some under 40 and a few up to 50mm.
The lengths are so variable, I believe, because the bores are so different between models and years.
disclaimer. I make and sell custom barrels.

I have a Yamaha 681 and had to have its stock barrel shortened. I've never measured its resulting length, but the clarinet is now playable at 442 if need be.

What Alan said.....
I have an old Selmer Series 9 that is a great horn and needs 43mm.

It is a Buffet (R13?...... NOT a Prestige) circa 1996.
I'm really thinking something like the 41.5mm would be the ticket though.
THANKS !!!!!!!

Clark Fobes makes Eb barrels (presumably primarily for R13s) in 41, 42 and 43 mm lengths so a shorter barrel for you is by no means out of the question. (My 1960's R13 takes a 43mm barrel, FTLIW.)

I just checked some old files....The shortest I made was 38.5mm
Be certain in the Buffets that you note whether it is an RC or Regular R13 model.
In the Selmers, the 9 series and the Recital are popular. I have a Recital Eb that plays like a flute.....awesome.

My barrel (a Robert Scott I believe) is 40mm (came with it and all I have). I play about 40 cents sharp (argh!) with everything pushed in. Of course, my eefer is a Bundy from around the '50s or '60s (has the older logo), so it's quite old.
