Just wanted to let you all know that today is my last day at The Peabody Conservatory of Music. I'm ending my 19 year tenure, which for ten years over lapped my 33 years at Towson University, by having my students over to my place to play "bass clarinet" trios and have a Bar B Q. As someone said, going out on a low note, or two. I've had a great run, many fine students and many of them performing professionally. Since I've only been with the Baltimore Symphony for a mere 47 years I'm not ready to give that up yet. I probably won't make Druckers record of 60 years but I have a few good years left and I'll still be active in our chamber music series. I'll also certainly keep offering my advise of this fine clarinet format. So now I begin my "semi" retirement with only one job. Life is good. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Congratulations! Not sure how hard the decision is to retire but for someone as active as you, I am sure that you will no doubt fill your time with other worthwhile endeavors.
By the way, were you in the Atlanta airport on Saturday the 24th of April? Had I not been in a very very long line trying to reschedule my flight back to the Boston area I would have introduced myself.

Thanks Rick, no it wasn't me in Atlanta, must have been a look alike. If you check out my website and look at the picture page you will see "My Garden" pictures so you know one of the things I do in my spare time. ESP

Congratulations, Ed! I do hope to meet you/hear you play in person soon, I can't believe I've lived half my life in the DC Metro area (plus 6 months in Charm City itself) and haven't crossed paths with you. Enjoy a well-deserved semi-retirement!

Congratulations and welcome to freedom from the tyranny of the alarm clock! I'm sure that your students and fellow faculty are sad, because they know that they will miss somebody who will always stop to listen and, when asked, offer some words of advice and encouragement. From what I have read on this board, you are a true teacher, not just another condescending accumulator of degrees and dispenser of grades who can't wait to escape the classroom or hallway for something else. But a teacher never stops teaching; you may have cut the formal tie to Peabody, but you're still a teacher!
Best wishes,

Conbgratulations on retiring! Funny how people always think retirement means more time to spend on things like gardening and chamber music practice ... and then the hobbies get out of control, and next thing you know you're filing for a home business permit. As my dad warned me when I opened the stained glass studio and warned my husband when his bookbinding started to pay, "If you're self-employed, it means having a tyrant for a boss." Good luck with that! ;-)

I want to thank you all for you well wishes. Don't forget, I'm still playing full time in the BSO, if you can call my position full time but they pay me full time, still playing in and co-ordinating our chamber music series and I've always been a gardener. The difference now is that I have more time to do it and I won't have to mow my acre and a half after teaching all day. It will be the first time I've only had one job for many, many years but I'll still teach privately, just not nearly as many students and I can do it on my schedule. Thanks again, ESP

Eddie, I'm so sorry to see you leave Peabody. When I attended the school as a student, I was amazed with the top quality instruction the students got. Everyone had to study piano, the sight singing and ear training for 2 years was a treat. Then there was Music Analysis, perhaps my favoite class.
Is Dr Marra still there?
You are a true master and I hope some of the local students and pros alike will want to take some lessons with you.

By the way Eddie, I still have a sister near Baltimore and I get to see her every 2 or 3 years. I'm dying to share a dozen of those Maryland crabs and a few beers with you! Is Big Bertha's still around?

Hi Bob, I don't know a Dr. Marra so I guess he's not at Peabody anymore but then again, I don't know all the class room faculty. A lot has changed since you attended Peabody, that was a different era. Some for the good, some not so much. Let's just say I'm not a bit sorry I'm retiring.
Crabs and beer sound great, give me a call when you know you're coming to town. Take care, ESP
