I recently found a relatively unknown supplier of custom barrels who hand makes superb barrells to the exact specifications of an individual mouthpiece/clarinet combination. This fellow was an apprentice with Moennig for some time and he has the same attention to perfection that made the classic Moennig mouthpieces so great. He custom made 2 (Bb and A) for me and both are absolutely superb. Especially the A clarinet barrel ... it's the most responsive I have ever had on A clarinet ... very nice sound, good scales and legato and really snappy staccato response. His method is to measure the bore of the mouthpiece and the bore of the upper joint and then make barrels with the classic Moennig taper that perfectly match to the dimensions on each end. He lines the barrel bore with a hard rubber material to reduce dimensional changes over time due to warm/moist and cool/dry cycles, making the barrel more stable and durable.

I have no association at all with him, except as a customer.

I have worked with Les since the 80s, he is a very fine craftsman and an excellent player. He's been working on barrels for many years with great success! I'm not surprised you love his barrels.
