 Clarinet Teachers In California

Well first of all this is my first post on the BBoard. I'm still in high school and I've only been playing a few years. The city I live in is pretty small with a limited choice of teachers with limited abilities. Practicing quite a bit since I started playing, my tutor tells me that I should start looking for a new teacher in larger cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco to further my abilities. Since both of those larger cities are a few hours drive from where I live, I would only be able to get a lesson about once in 1-2 months, but probably for an extended lesson. There's also Fresno which is a bit closer if anyone knows any teachers there. I'm open to any suggestions say within a 4 hour drive from where I live. (Area code 93277).

Does anyone have any good reccomendations to a pretty decent teacher in California?

You wouldn't normally think so, but Fresno is sort of a clarinet hot spot--Russell Howland was the clarinet professor there for many years, and plenty of his former students are still in the area teaching and performing. Mr. Howland was a woodwind legend!

Contact Cal State Fresno--clarinet professor there now is Miles Ishigaki, who is very active in the area. Larry Honda teaches woodwinds (former Howland student) at Fresno City College. I'm sure they can connect you with some good clarinet instructors.

Good luck!

Anne
