Hi all,
I have an R13 that I feel the left hand pinky E/B key is just a mm shorter than what I want it (I have relatively small hands). For some reason the tip of it is a little bent and I thought that maybe bending it straight will solve this issue. My teacher also suggested that someone might be able to solder an extension to make it a bit longer.
In either case I wouldn't want to mess with it myself.. so I was wondering if any of you know any techs that are good with keyworks in the greater DC area.

On the other side of the Potomac in Northern Virginia, Peter Ferrante of Presto Brass & Woodwinds is excellent. He's restored clarinets and saxophones for me that had problems, including bent keys, that I wasn't competent to fix. If it isn't an emergency, he can be slow, but he does first-rate work. 22198 N. Not a "key" fix, but a suggestion....... you could place your hand with the fingers perpendicular to the horn bringing the pinky MUCH further down.

Paul, that's what I usually end up doing, but the problem is when I do that, the contact area of my ring finger on the key hole is too much off center toward the pinky side, and the contact area of my thumb is also off center (I'm one of the people with a thumb that can't bent over 180 degrees outwards). This feels quite uncomfortable..

Buy the way, I play with my thumb rest much lower than most players to overcome the problem of my pinkies reaching the lower keys. I had that done years ago when a student came in with that done and it felt so good. ESP

Ed are you talking about your right pinky? Otherwise how does moving the thumb rest down help the left pinky?

By the way, I visited David Spiegelthal this morning and he soldered an extension for me. He did a wonderful job and it's a lot easier on my left pinky now!

Great to hear that you've gotten what you need to make your playing comfortable.
Funny thing is..... you're absolutely right about the "off-center" thing. Funny I never really noticed that before. I don't think the "off-center" position is a problem for me as long as whatever part of my finger/thumb lands on the hole and seals it, I'm fine with that............never really been one for "convention."

Paul, yeah I don't think most people would notice it. I only notice it again because my small hands. If my ring finger touches the tone hole too much off center, then it becomes a bit insecure. I guess if you have relatively wider finger tips, then it wouldn't matter much
