 compact single case?
Author: greenmonkey
Date:   2010-03-17 04:50

I need to get a very very compact single soprano (Bb) case. I've had a hard time finding anything good... help? I'm looking for the thin square style, not tubes or anything, I want it to fit in the front pocket of my BAM trekking bass case.

Two compact cases that come to mind are the Protec Slimline and the Yamaha YCL-20 case.

Another option is the Buffet single pochette case.

I have one of these and it is a really great case.

I have a pochettte style and like it, very slimline. Not much room for accessories though. They pop up used on the auction site every now and then.

Wow, get in contact with Yamaha CSG/SEV owners who have bought replacement cases. The CSG case is a hard shell that just fits the clarinet. It's meant to be carried in the zippered leatherette outer shell but without it, you won't find ANYTHING smaller.

Sorry, already gave mine away.

These are quite compact but may not be quite what you're after, as they're more generally space-saving as opposed to flat:

The student model Jupiters come in a case very similar to the tiny Yamaha 20 case but I prefer the lining in the Jupiter case which is a nice burgundy velvet rather than the fuzzy black fur inside the Yamaha which tends to shed after awhile. The plastic Jupiters come up on the auction site for peanuts.

Also, I am not sure what size the exterior pocket of the BAM bass clarinet case is, but ProTec makes a clarinet case that fits inside the outer pocket of their Alto sax tri case, it is very similar to the ProTec slimline but without the shoulder strap or the accessory pocket.

Probably the most compact, if you could find it, is a Selmer Tray-pack Clarinet Case but it has no space for anything other than the clarinet. It was designed to fit into a sax case.
Only image I could find from an ended auction:

I found to my dismay that the Selmer Tray-pack case will not accommodate the bell of a Buffet Clarinet -- probably lots of other marques, too.

The Tray Pack is useless unless you're a tenor sax doubler. For an actual clarinet case the Yamaha is as smaall as it gets. You want smaller? Wrap the individual sections in bubblewrap.

The Buffet case that was mentioned (Pochette I think it's called) IMO is not good. Sure some people had this case without problems, but how many others they have seen? MOST I've seen had the that closing springy thing stop working at least on one side if not both sides. I don't recommend any case which uses this type of mechanism for closing.

The best small case I have come across is the newer selmer pouchette case w/fabric covering and zipper. It is well designed and very compact. New/demo ones have been turning up on that big auction site.

Hi,

The case that came with my Yamaha CS Custom is really small and it has a very nice case cover as well if you are interested.

But then, where will one carry all the accoutrements that are a must for any self-respecting GAS person?
