 Karl Schlechta's basset horn

I have a 5 disc CD set titled Mannhiem School where Karl plays the Carl Stamitz Concerto in Bb for Basset horn on CD #2. The instrument has a very interesting tonal quality and I was wondering if anyone on this board knows who made his basset horn?

Seems like wooden, uninspired playing to me. And the YouTube comment on the poor quality of register change is spot-on! Maybe Black & Decker made his basset horn.

Is the instrument, per chance, a period instrument? Strictly on the basis of the sound and interpretation, I agree with Larry Bocaner. I hear much interference from overtones. Of course, it's a bit unfair to judge from a YouTube broadcast; and if Schlechta's playing a period instrument, I do not quite know what to expect.

I can certainly say it's not a period Basset horn. It is most certainly a modern instrument, the (poor) register changes give that away. You don't get that on a period instrument because it is open holed like a classical clarinet.

Who knows what make of modern basset horn is being used but to me the player makes it sound more difficult than the concerto actually is from a technical standpoint.

I have the CD and think the playing is good. It isn't super slick but it sounds earnest and honest.
