Some help in the Presto 6/8 section please... The conductor says the first rehearsal
We're taking the 6/8 section in ONE. What's the best way to practice this and think of it in one. I've practiced thinking in 2 and this has me confused now.

It's best conducted/counted in 1 to the bar as it's fast, and there are some 5/8 bars as well which are also the same duration as the 6/8 bars.
As it's fast, think 'diddly-diddly' for the 6/8 and 'hippopotamus' for the 5/8 bars. It's one of those pieces you have to feel the pulse rather than try to count.
(Having the forked Bb mechanism makes the clarinet solo a lot easier when the sequence starts on the Bb).

That he's conducting in one beat per measure is a convenience for him - conducting this in two at full tempo can be a little busy and physically tiring for the conductor. But the subdivision into two beats doesn't change. You can still think in two as you play. The chances are that, conducted in one, it will end up faster than you practiced it, so some practice with a metronome, gradually speeding it up to the required tempo, may be needed.

Think down beat upbeat instead of one and two. Much the same as you would think cut time, 4/4 in two instead of in 4. Three notes on the the down beat, three notes on the up beat. Use a metronome. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
