To the contra players who own Leblanc paperclip models:
What kind of stands do you use with these horns?
I know the K&M bass clarinet/bassoon stand works very well with the straight models. But do they work for paperclips as well?
I would think the width of the paperclips’ top coiled tube(s) and their closed-knit arrangement of keys would not fit too well with the narrowness of the cup on the K&M stand. But having never seen or touched one in person, I am only guessing.
Even if it can be fitted, wouldn’t the horn be too top-heavy? Also if the holder doesn’t catch the horn right at its center point, it can create balance problems.
What other stands are available for the paperclips? I know K&M makes a contrabassoon stand. Would it work?

I've used a K&M bass clarinet stand for my LeBlanc low C paperclip for 7 years now with no problems. The top "cup" is absolutely no problem. The lower "cup" must be absolutely horizontal or the lower "bend" of the paperclip tends to slip out.

Thank you, Don. I was looking at the contrabassoon stand. It would be wonderful to have the bass stand work well, instead. I have been thinking of getting one. Anyone else have input?

How much does a paperclip model contra cost (Eb or Bb) on the average? I've seen them for as much as 12,000 in a store in Rotterdam, Netherlands...thanks!

I was VERY fortunte to get my low C Leblanc paperclip, fully restored and adjusted, from Charles Fail Music in Atlanta for U.S. $2,100. However, that was 7 years ago. I understand that they are no longer made in Paris but in the U.S. and appear to have a black powercoated finish.
When I tried to find a replacement pivot screw for my throat G# key, Leblanc sent me a truly cheap, very skimpy, pointed screw rather than the rod-shaped original. They seem to have cut back seriously on the quality of the instrument. Also, since they were purchased by Steinway, they have NO customer service -- only parts order takers that don't know what they're doing.
I actually had a local machine shop here in La Crescenta (CA) who makes parts for JPL and the Mars Rover fabricate replacement screws.
If anyone has any updated and "first-hand" knowledge of the "Black Beauties" I'd be very interested.

For around the house my paperclip hangs on a bungee chord at a comfortable height for the peg to also support it on the bottom.

I use the K&M bassoon/bass clarinet stands for basset horn, bass clarinet and contrabassoon (and the very rare occasions I have to play bassoon), so I can't see any reason for it not to work for a paperclip contra.
If it has the metal cup with the slots in it, don't rest the bottom bow of any instrument in this as it'll do damage. The rubber lined cups are fine if that's how you rest it, otherwise rest the instrument on the stand with the floor spike locating in the cup.

I actually have the stand that was designed by Leblanc for the paper clip, which I bought in the early 1990's. It is no longer available, however! It is a tripod afare that has a telescoping vertical shaft onto which is attached a bar that has clamps into which the bottom loop fits. Sorry I don't have a picture though!

I have a K&M contrabassoon stand, which works very well for the paperclip models. Perhaps the top piece is a bit wider than necessary, but it doesn't really bother.

I use the K&M bass clarinet and bassoon stand for both my CAC anc CBC. So do my friends. Never had any problem with them. They are $127 at music123.com.

Re the K&M stand notice there are two version and the difference is (I think only) the size of the cup. I prefer the bigger one.

The contrabassoon one has a wide bracket/rest so the contra fits side on in the stand http://uk.shopping.com/xPO-K-M-K-M-Contra-Bassoon-Stand
But with the standard bassoon/bass clarinet one, the bracket/rest can be widened to take a contrabassoon so it fits well just above the LH thumb cluster.
On Leblanc and Vito contras - EEb, BBb, straight or paperclip, no adjustment to the bracket should be needed so the stand can be used as it comes.
