Got an Evette-Schaeffer bass clarinet (plastic or hard rubber...don't know which). Tech said it was probably made in the 1950's (but I didn't think to ask what it was made of). No register vent on the neck, intermediate model probably. Just had an overhaul. Just got my new Fobes student mouthpiece (love that thing). Everything works great until I get to clarion G. Then it's nothing but squeaks. Using a Vandoren 3.
Since it plays a "middle C" with ease and the only difference between that and high G is the register key opening up, I am assuming that I don't have any leaks. What else could it be?

Make sure that the throat Bb vent closes securely when you press the register key and the thumb (F) plate together. There is an adjustment screw to facilitate this and it might need periodic tweaking.

It could be a leak, it doesn't take much, it has to be in perfect working condition. That's always the difficult register to voice properly even with a professional model. I've had many advanced clarinet students trying to learn the bass come to me to "learn" how to voice that properly. Many have been discouraged from playing bass because of that. Check out my bass clarinet page on my website for hints on how to play that register but again, the instrument has to be working well and you have to have a decent reed. If all else fails contact a professional bass clarinet player and take a few lesson. I just about gave up on playing bass because of that register and a poor instrument when I began playing bass before I took lessons from Joe Allard. The first thing he did was encourage me to buy a better instrument and the rest is history. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
