I have been playing clarinet since August - renting a Selmer. I'm playing in a community band. After deciding to buy a new clarinet, I narrowed my choice down to an R-13 and a Yamaha SE. I've heard alot about the R-13. Any comments on the Yamaha? Another question is cost: The R-13 is $2500 and the Yamaha SE is $2250.

I've been renting a Yamaha CL-20 for the past 3 months. I recently tried the R-13 and the Yamaha SE. They were both very nice. They each had a different sound and feel (to me), so I'd say it's a matter of personal preference, price and other factors that are beyond my expertise as a beginning clarinetist.

IMHO either horn would serve you well. The prices you quoted seem about $600 too high! I play R13s.

I checked the wwandbw web site, and the R-13 is $1,699 and the SE is $1,669. So, shop around for the best price, and customer service.

Please, please don't pay $2,500 for an R-13! That's an almost unheard of price in the USA.
Forget "list" prices etc. and pay NO MORE than $1,750 for a new R-13.
The Woodwind and the Brasswind catalog may not publish prices on certain instruments, but you certainly get a price from them and go from there.
Best wishes!
