 buffet serial 159XXX
Author: spfrosty

I just bought our daughter a wood buffet with the serial 159xxx. I checked the BC site and it says its an R13, so I guess I'm just asking for confirmation from you Buffet experts here!

Brand : Buffet Crampon
Instrument : R 13 Amrique
Serial number : 159290
Year of manufacturing : 07/10/1975

I paid $275, was it good?

I have gotten so much help from you all in the past and don't know what I would have done without this board! I originally came here a couple of years ago seeking advice on what to start our daughter off on, I ended up getting her a V40, fobes MP and rovener lig. Latter I also bought her a 147 (which she claims she don't like :/ ). Well, now in 7th grade she has been excepted into IMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) band. (on the V40).

Thank you all!

As long as it's in good shape and sounds good, it's a great deal!

Thanks for the quick reply mrn!

When I get it in my hands I'll post some pics.

So it is an R13, 1975? Would this still be considered the "golden era"?
Also, I should have asked this in my original post but, can you tell from the model buffet lists if a clarinet is an A, Bb, or...I forget the third? I just wasnt sure if the Am?rique indicates an A.

it is an R13, and some actually says that the 15XXXX ones are the very good R13s in buffet history. And yes it is considered to be the golden era.

it's Bb.. not A. I had one before that the serial number returns me the same description as this one.

by the way, if the clarinet is in good shape, then it's a great great deal!!!

Ok, well as I said, I would post pics of this once I got it! It's here, and here are the pics :) !

(I have uploaded them to my picasa)

In really good shape I think, outside of needing polished up and repadded. It came with a Van. 2RV mp. The only "odor" I smell is that of sliver, like an old coin collection. I was looking at getting her a new case for this but she likes the old one, surprisingly (which as you can see in the pics is not in bad shape) :/ ! But, I wonder about how sanitary it is?

Now, what do you all recommend for bore oil, I have read controversy of just what is "correct" to use. I've heard/read that what you buy as bore oil is a "natural oil" so you need to watch what you buy. When you do get ready to oil it, thin the oil down with a bit of, (something, I cant remember right off the top of my head, i'd have to look it up again). And since I'm sure this hasn't been oil in some time to lightly oil it once a week for a month.

So, given the pics and the serial can I still be confident that this is a R-13?

Thanks again for all your help!

Bore oil? The Doctor's products. http://www.doctorsprod.com

Accept no substitutes! :) Also get one of his Black Legend silk swabs, and some Dr. Slick cork grease. He really has great products on his site.

Buffet says it's an R-13, and it looks just like my R-13s, so I don't see any reason think it isn't one.

I'd say you got a stellar deal. There are fine repairpersons that would overhaul it for 250-300 dollars, and it's resale value would be at least twice what you paid for the instrument plus overhaul.

Thanks for the replies so far and vote of confidence that this is in fact a R13.

So, what about the sanitary concerns of the case and allowing her to use it and just get a good carrying bag?

Is the 2RV mp a good mate for the R13 (outside of the player)?

As far as trusting a tech to work on this, how about Sayre's in Lombard,IL? Anyone else in ILL. know of any other respected techs west of Rick? (also, anyone that has dealt with him, what are his prices, say on an overhaul?)

Thanks again, and look forward to more comments.
