Just returned from a chamber music recital with guest artist Stanley Drucker.

He played in a number of clarinet quartet pieces and Stanley was featured (with Naomi) in the Mendelssohn op.114 #2

Stanley, as usual, sounded wonderful.

His longevity and passion for making great music is awe inspiring.

BTW - for all the equipment geeks, I looked carefully at his clarinet and Stanley is playing an 8 year old Buffet RC Prestige with the LH pinky Eb key removed, stock Buffet barrel, Vandoren V12 reeds #4 1/2, stock Buffet (!) non inverted ligature, and his clarinet upper joint has bladder pads, not cork.

We talked for quite a while backstage about his career, reeds, equipment, funny Philharmonic stories, etc... He told me that his set of Buffet RC Prestiges were selected in Paris for him by Michel Arrignon and he thinks they are the best clarinets he's ever owned.

Mr Drucker passed through Chicago last week after his participation in the MSU Clarinet Day.

He had wonderful stories. I did not get to hear him due to my parent commitments. But there was a serendipitous offer to join his dinner party which allowed me to converse with him at some depth regarding his early experiences and playing under all the big names of the 20th and 21st century.

I have never met him before but was struck by his open personality and nice sense of humor.

Glad to see that he is enjoying his retirement with his wife, his clarinet, and his following.

Anyone knows his secret of keeping up so well at 80? Men I can't believe it he looks more like 65-70 rather than 80.

Maybe playing the Clarinet keeps our cheek muscles from dropping.

GBK, nice photo of you and Drucker.

As far as Drucker looking great at 80, I suspect he picked his parents carefully. It's all about genetics (and leading a reasonable life). Or as my MD dad used to say he "inherited his father's disposition and his mother's cardiovascular system." Those were some of my grandparents' worst traits!

Yup -- and part of leading a reasonable life involves having something active and valuable to do. I think our bodies and brains are "use it or lose it" equipment. Mr. Drucker plays the clarinet when a lot of other men and women his age retire from meaningful jobs and then waste away, snoozing off in front of the TV.
