 What to replace first

I am in the market for a new mouthpiece, Bb barrel, and ligature as I have had the same set up for nearly six years. I plan on sticking with the same mouthpiece and barrel but am going to various different types of ligatures.

Where do I start? I have a new barrel for my A clarinet, should I try the new mouthpiece mainly with my A then find a Bb barrel to match to my later on? It is important that my horns are matched in feeling, intonation, etc. Thanks in advance for the advice.

You fail to mention why you feel you need to get new gear. What is wrong with what you are currently using, which is requiring you to invest thhe time and effort, as well as the money, to purchase new equipment? Once you answer that wuestion, the other answers will be easier to find.

I don't want to get into the debate about "blowout" but I believe that this is the case with my mouthpiece and barrel. I recently tried a new m30 and the sound was dramatically fuller and had improved intonation. My mouthpiece seemed thin and seemed more difficult to navigate. My clarinets are maintained by the Brannens so I know that they are fine. My ligature is bent, when I tried a new one, I noticed it was a better match as well.

1. Ligatures are cheap.

2. Mouthpiece has to suit your body, feel and tonal preference.

3. Whatever barrel goes best with the above.

Have you tried cleaning your old parts? I had an older horn that seemed to be going dead. I used a mouthpiece brush, warm water, and a small amount of dish soap to clean the insides of the barrel and mouthpiece. I was amazed by the amount of gunk that came out. After allowing the barrel to dry overnight, I re-oiled it and the horn sounds great again.

James,
A couple of other possibilities to think about in regards to “blowout”:
Your old mouthpiece may need re-facing or maybe just “touched up” by a mouthpiece maker.
It could be your choice of reeds…Not all reeds sound good with all mouthpieces.
As an example, I used a Walter Grabner K14 for a couple of years with AW reeds and was able to produce, (according to my instructor), a beautifully full and dark sound. Recently I purchased a Morales-Backun mouthpiece. I tried the AW reeds with my new piece and the sound was flat and thin, so my instructor suggested I try a Vandoren V12…What a difference…The thin flat sound was replaced by an even fuller, darker and richer than the K14 with the AW reeds. I then tried the V12 reed on the Grabner K14. The sound was quite good but not as good as with the AW reeds.
Just my two cents,
Allan

Thanks for the advice guys. I went to the Woodwind and Brasswind yesterday and I purchased a replacement Vandoren M30 13 Series and the BG Traditional Silver Ligature.

I lost my barrel! I'm using a Muncy synthetic that is quite amazing in the meanwhile. I'm just thrilled with my new set up.
