 audition pieces for AYO

Hello! I am preparing some audition pieces for the Asian Youth Orchestra auditions in January and March. It is a professional orchestra that tours during the summer. Can anybody suggest 1 fast and 1 slow movement? I know that judges often hear the same Mozart Clarinet Concerto or Weber's Concerto or Concertino. Could you give me some suggestions that is something out of the ordinary? But at the same level of these pieces?

How about playing a movement or two of the Poulenc Sonata?

I think Poulenc makes a good audition piece because it doesn't rely as much on the piano part as, say, the Brahms Sonatas. It's "standard repertoire," but it's still different from the usual Weber and Mozart.

Nielsen Concerto

Just remember though that it's not what you play, but how you play it that will matter the most.

The common thread here is bipolar disorder. :) Poulenc had it. Nielsen wrote his Concerto for a clarinettist who had it. Both pieces are prone to mood swings.

Quick question, though. Although I've heard it many times, I've never actually played Nielsen. Is it really about the same level of difficulty as the Weber Concertos? I was under the impression that the piece had a reputation for being much more difficult than that, possibly more difficult than Copland.

I suppose one of these days I'll learn Nielsen, for my own enjoyment, if nothing else. As a listener, I like the piece a lot.

Mozart or Weber is just fine. It is not a professional orchestra, it is a student training orchestra. Several of the players in the BSO I play in coach there every summer. It is high quality. I believe they rehearse for several weeks and then usually go on tour. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
