 Problem playing lower register
Author: clibo
Date:   2009-08-27 11:02

Hi,

I'm having trouble playing my lower register (low A,G,F,E). When I play these notes it sounds like my register key is being used, which is not the case. E.g if I play a low F it sounds like my C (12th). Any reasons why this is the case?

Rgds,
C

Sounds like the pad at the top of your lower joint is not coming down all the way. Sometimes it is as easy a fix as making sure the 1-and-1 Bb linkage is not to high coming off the top joint. You can check this by turning the joint so that you can some space between these links when you depress the lower joint rings (or turn so that the links don't link up at all to check those notes).

If not that, then perhaps a leaky pad on the sliver key.

Check the upper joint for leaks.

A common problem here is either that one of the pads is leaking on the top of the top joint, side keys, G# or A key. Also, if the G# key is not closing all the way because the little screw on the top of that key is to low it will prevent that key from closing all the way and causing that problem, just back it up then.
Suggestion, using the tip joint only, cover all the opened holes and cover the lower opening with you hand. Now blow air though the top part and see if air is escaping from one or more pads or keys. If it's a pad you will have to have it replaced, if it's a key not closing you might be able to adjust it or have to bring it to a repair person. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
