 Student vs. Quebec Legere Reeds
Author: CarlT

I,m well into my 2nd year of playing now. About 6 months ago I bought a 2-1/2 Legere Student reed. I really wasn't at all impressed even with my limited abilities to ascertain what sounds good and what doesn't. Even then, with a very weak embouchure, the reed was just too soft and artificial sounding.

Have any of you ever played the Student reed and later bought one of the better Legere reeds (say Quebec)? If so, are the more professional reeds THAT much better? I would assume so, but just wanted to check before buying one. I realize there is quite a size differential from a 2-1/2 Student reed to a 3 Pro type (which I believe is the smallest Quebec reed made); however, I have little problem now playing a no. 3 VD, V-12, so I would think the Legere would not present that much of a problem to me. It's just the quality of the sound compared to the Student version that concerns me.

Never tried the student reeds, as they were too soft. I have tried the legere Quebec and the standard cut Legere, and the difference is noght and day. I really do not like the standard cut, but the Quebec works wonderfully for me. I alternate between the 3.5 Quebecs and the VD V12 3.5 reeds.

The reeds are all the same size, by the way. They differ in strength. It's best to match the mouthpiece you are playing with what type and strength of reed you are considering. What mouthpiece are you using again?

The student reeds only run to a certain strength and if you want harder reeds you have to switch to the more expensive ones.

I've used Legere for a while. They are good.. but I've discovered that they cost too much money, because a lot of them only last for one week of playing. Anyways, I just started to use the ATG system of Ridenour and it seemed to be pretty good and I can save a lot of money on reeds now :):)

I have been using WQuebec cut reeds for several years, and NEVER have I had a reed last for just a week. The typical reed lasts for months, with proper care. Nothing special there, either.... rotate among a few reeds, don't play one reed for more than two hours straight, put them into a good reed case when finished.... the usual stuff.

Jeff said, "What mouthpiece are you using again?"

I use a Vandoren M13L, with Vandoren no. 3 V-12 reeds mostly.

The Legere chart shows the no. 3 V-12s are about equal to the no. 3 Legere Quebecs, so I might order one or two just to satisfy my curiosity about sythetic reeds.

Thanks, fellas, for your input.

I'm with Jeff here too.

I use the Quebec for play testing (clarinet repair) and also when I play sax/clarinet in jazz bands. Using a regular cane reed when you need it 100% playable in an instant .. only synthetics work that well).

I've been using the same Quebec for well into 3 months now. And I normally keep one on a mpc for playtesting.

I use a Legere for play testing after repairs. Only a couple of months ago I started using that reed but it is from about a year ago and still plays just fine. Pretty much the same as when it was new from what I can remember. I use another mouthpiece because it's not comfortable to use the main mouthpiece (which is in the case) for play testing. I think it's a Quebec one.

I can't really say whether it's better than the student model because the strengths I tried from both are very different. But a student Legere reed helped a student of mine a lot and solved a lot of reed problems.
