My teacher is Ann Wilcheck-Schuessler was a graduate performance major at IU when Ricardo was going there and was assigned to look after him while he was there. If I recall correctly he was around 16 years old at the time and only attended 1 year or so.

I'll be speaking to her on Friday and ask her with whom specifically Morales was studying.

I was at Indiana for a brief time while Ricardo was there (I think our time overlapped by only 1 year) and I believe that he studied with Anton Weinberg. I'm not sure where he is teaching now.

Jerry McD.

p.s. If my fading memory serves me right, I believe he was only 14 at the time. Believe it or not, he was working on the Nielsen then...you could tell by listening to him that whatever 'it' is...he had 'it.'

I just spoke to Ricardo and yes, he studied with visiting professor Anton Weinberg.

He studied with him for 2 years and said that "he was really great".

The bigger question is --how good is RM as a teacher?

Better to start a great line than to end one.

His masterclasses are very good - I've attended 2 of them. If you are in NYC this monday, he's giving one at Juilliard. (see the "What's Happening?"calendar on the right side of this page)

Alia Sabur likes him very much (she won the Yamaha Competition as their youngest Clarinet student ever).

I've talked with him a lot about teaching issues, philosophies and he really knows his stuff, and his foundation is really solid.

At Selmer Day this year, he critiqued a students' performance of the Mozart Concerto, 2nd mvt.

Not only were his comments on breathing and fingering technique spot on, his musical suggestions, which reflected his understanding of Mozart's thinking at the time he wrote the concerto (a recent immersion in bel canto composition) were outstanding. I think even those with years of this piece under their belts learned something.

Newsbulletin:

studying with Morales' teacher is NOT going to guarantee you any success, unless you happen to be as tremendously gifted as Morales.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Ed Palanker was very much of an influence to Ricardo also. He studied with him for 7 summers at the music festival Ed taught at (Eastern Music Festival).

When Ed asked Ricardo why he kept coming back to study with him, his reply was "because I like you!!".

There are several really great teachers at IU. Hard to go wrong there.

Ricardo is like family to me, his sister is actually my God-mother, indeed he went to Indiana I don't know who was his teacher but I have heard awesome things about how he got his artists diploma. I am a clarinet and he has gave me lessons, he is AMAZING AS A TEACHER, AS A MUSICIAN, AS A SOLOIST, he is great. And he was not in Indiana for a long time though. Indiana is a great school so go for it and good luck.

I'd like to thank David B. for the nice endorsement. I can guarantee Chito that I can get any student to sound as good as Ricardo Morales if they study with me. The only pre-requisite that I require is that they, or you, are just as talented as he was when he studied with me, that you be just as enthusiastic as he was as a student and that you practice as much as he did. That's all I need to make you or any other player as good as Ricardo Morales. It helps too if you have his terrific personality. Of course he got all that from me, even his good looks. ESP

------------------------------------------------------

Anton isn't there anymore. Indiana does have a great Clarinet Studio Program still though.

Ricardo is also a product of immense talent. You don't perform the Weber Concerto #2 by memory with Orchestra your 2nd year of playing unless you have Mozartian natural abilities. His teachers were great, but he wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as far without his raw ability. In weight lifting it would be like someone who benches 400, somebody else who does 475, and him who does 700. The others are very good, but "not THAT good".

Genetic engineering I think ........ ;)

How many of us have practiced 4.5 hours the very first day that we got our instrument? I did 2 hours and thought that was pretty good.

Is anyone else tired of all the Ricardo *** kissing that is constantly on this board? It's not my board or my right to judge what converstions take place here but it is getting a little old.

Ricardo is a great musician and clarinetist but there are others in the world that are also great. No offense to anyone but it's like a broken record with all of the praise that constantly comes from Ed and David, both of whom I respect a great deal. It's just a little too much for me sometimes.

Mouthpieces
Reeds
Ricardo

That pretty much covers most discussions here these days.

Well, I was going to update you on what he may or may not have eaten for Lunch today, but since you don't want to hear it............

 ;)

Remember though that neither Ed nor myself opened up the thread.

Other thing is that I'd guess that you've never met nor heard him live. I'd probably feel the same way if I hadn't either. I do get your point though. Neither Ed nor myself need nor intend to kiss his *** as we don't need to.

Nothing to gain or loose either way as Ed was his mentor and I'm his friend.

Katrina, he had played rhythm (bongos) while singing with his family to the neighbors before that. Not sure if he had formal lessons.

That's true David, I have not met him or heard him in person. But I have heard and met many others that are fantastic that never get mentioned. It's a little one sided sometimes I think. It goes with out saying that Ricardo is special, just a bit tired of the same old song.

For example, I would love to hear Ed discuss Steve Barta's playing or how is the marriage between the BSO and Marin Alsop going. There are lots of great posters here and people with interesting stuff to share and it never happens. I would like to hear about other clarinet players in the country besides Ricardo once in a while.

Thanks David. I hadn't looked at that video before. He's sooooo wonderful! I love at the end when he starts talking about his siblings and says, "Well, me, I just play the clarinet."

I think a lot of us clarinetists act that same way! I say it all the time myself...but man o man is he miles and eons beyond where I ever could have gotten even with practicing more!

For myself, I never get tired of hearing people who knew or know him personallly talking about Ricardo.

And another thing, I wish he'd make more solo CDs. I've just got the one with French compositions...anyone know of any others?

Ryan, I can't talk about a colleague in my orchestra or our BSO conductor in an opened forum, I have to work with these people, it won't be right. I must say though that I've read many posts about players other than Morales on this BB. There have been videos posted on some outstanding players, young and established and I suspect there will be many more, I certianly hope so.
I think the reason Morales has gotten so much face time on this board was because of what happened with the Chicago auditions last year, how many players have you ever heard of that have been the only finalist for a job like that and then turned it down. Especially when there were so many other outstanding applicants in the game. He was, and I guess still is, big news. He is also a regular performer at many of the big clarinet festivals, very warm and friendly and very easy to talk to. He’s not only a great player but also a great musician as well and a very nice, friendly person. I think Ricardo will always be mentioned here but I think it will slow down as he stops making news. Ed, I completely understand that and agree. It was more of a hypothetical.

All:

When I met Ricardo, many, MANY years ago, he was learning to play the violin. He didn't care much for that instrument and really wanted to play the clarinet. Ed, do you remember Pepe Emmanuelli? Pepe studied with you at Eastern for a few summers and always spoke very well of you as a teacher. Anyway, Ricardo used to come by and listen to Pepe and I practice for hours. It was amazing that Ricardo would come back the next day and play the same etudes Pepe and I were *trying* to play but from memory. Honestly, I HATED that. :-) Oh yes, I often wonder if Ricardo would have been as amazing on the violin...

Has anybody heard Ricardo's newest recording?

Any reports?

I find the animosity here pretty unusual.

This is an open forum. If you don't want to read about something, don't read it. And if you want to talk about something else, post it yourself.

People can talk about whatever they want. You can't just have democracy your way.

Otherwise some animals are more equal than others.

Ronald, I do remember Pepe; he was a fine player and a very nice young man. He gave me a roll of floral tape to use for a lip saver and I've using it ever since, not the same roll of course. I do remember the Ricardo did begin playing violin and didn't like it. I think he made the right decision.
Alexis, right on, good for you. I don't remember anyone forcing anyone else to read these posts. Bye! ESP

I am getting ready to move near Philly and I want to continue clarinet lessons. I have a masters in music performance on clarinet. Can anyone contact some of the big performers and get lessons? I am assuming this is extremely hard just to call someone up such as Ricardo Morales and say, "hey can I take a few lessons?" Can anyone give me some advice as to what I should do or where I should start?

Thanks!

Clarissa - you certainly could give it a shot.

By the way, his Brahms Trio recording is now on Itunes. The date says October, but it just showed up on Itunes really recently.

Clarinetck84 -

I did the same thing when I moved to Indianapolis... looked up a couple of the big name performers/teachers in the area and sent them an email. I received a very pleasant response from Eli Eban and take the occasional lesson from him. It's not impolite, nor is it unusual for them to get such requests. It's both their business and a form of flattery. :) Do understand, though, that not everyone you contact will have time in their schedules, so they will either respond with an email declining your request, or they simply will not respond at all, thus also declining the request.

As for how to go about it, email is very friendly. It allows them to respond when they have time. Simply introduce yourself, give a brief reason why you'd like to take a lesson (for example, audition prep, a problem area you'd like to work on...) and ask if they give private lessons and their hourly rate. They don't want to read through a career history, but they do want some idea of what they're getting into before they commit another hour of their busy schedules.

You might consider taking lessons with a few different performers you admire, not just one.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Don Montanaro is still teaching, as well as others in town (and suburbs) who are really good if Ricardo isn't availiable.

Thank you for all the advice, it really is helpful. I am actually moving to Danville, which is two and half hours from Philly. I don’t mind driving the distance every few weeks for lessons but if there is a list of other fabulous and prestigious teachers in the suburb areas, shoot a list my way.

I've been listening to your Mendelssohn Recordings on you site actually. I've playing #2 in a few weeks. Great stuff!!

And David - I will second the notion about IU. Though I was there 35 years ago, IU has always been blessed with great clarinet faculty!
