 WWandBW NY Store Visit Tips
Author: Bill

I plan to visit wwandbw in NY this month to try some clarinets. I will focus on the R13. I do not play to buy on this trip, just get a "feel" for the R13 and maybe some comparable horns.

Has anyone visited the NY store? I'd like get an idea of what to expect, for example do they have private areas to try instruments, should I expect it to be crowded on a week day, should I call before I go to make sure they have R13s in stock, etc. I plan to bring my own mouthpiece, and reeds.

Bill, in September my husband and I went there to purchase an R13. What a great time! We did not call ahead, just mentioned that we wanted to look at nickel plated R13s when we arrived. He asked me if I had a mouthpiece and reeds. I did. He then asked us to wait a few minutes. We were then brought to a small room with a tuner. He offered to change the brand of tuner if we requested it. There were at least 6 R13s there for me to try. Amazing. I then tried them. He would stop in every so often to see how things were going. Also asked if I needed any others to try. Since I had been using a plastic rental, my husband had him bring in a plastic Vito just so I could do a 'direct' comparison with what I was used to playing. Night and day.

After I selected my baby, I tried some new mouthpieces on it. Found one that I really liked.

Personally, I don't know how anyone can do all that and not plunk their money down for one. I went last week, but was afraid to try a bass for that very reason. Obviously my problem, not theirs :-).

As for crowds. Both times I was there on a Thursday morning. There were quite a few people, but I had lots of time, and did not mind. From what I can remember, they have 4 or 5 'practice' rooms, so I don't think you'll have too much trouble.

Let us know how you do!

What a coincidence, I'm using a Yamaha plastic rental. I think it's great, but it's the only clarinet I've experienced, except for a metal clarinet I got last week via eBay. Even though I hate going to NY, you make it sound like an enjoyable, worthwhile experience.

YES they do have practice rooms to try several horns and dont worry it will not be crowded. Belive me I know because I am always there. Also the staff are very nice people, and they will answer all of your questions.

WW&BW in New York is an excellent place to try instruments. They're very courteous, the owner (or one of the senior people) plays clarinet, they have several nice tryout rooms, and they have a good stock of top model horns.

Sam Ash also has a good selection, but they've been obnoxious and ignorant every time I've been there. Stick with WW&BW.

Best regards.

WW&BW is very musician-friendly. They have a good repairmen on site. It is spacious and has never felt "crowded" when I've been there. They will probably order any merchandise that you're interested in trying.
