 rust in bass clarinet bell
Author: Library Geek
Date:   2009-03-26 00:10

I just purchased a used plastic Bundy bass clarinet, and the bell has rust in it. There is also a greenish spot toward the bend (as seen from the big opening). Is there a way to get this rust off (without damaging the bell). I just tried some Simple Green, and that cleaned it nicely, but did nothing for the rust. I've no idea if this is a silver or nickel bell (it is not the original bell that came with the instrument. I've tried a few searches here and could not find anything.

thanks for any advice,

Ann

That's not rust ('rust' applies only to iron-based metals); what you're seeing is copper oxide from corrosion of the brass (a copper alloy; copper oxide is green) where the nickel plating over the brass has either worn off or never existed. Try some Brasso -- you may have to apply and wipe it off multiple times, but the tarnish will all come off without damaging the metal.

Thanks!! I didn't know that bass clarinet bells (and necks?) were made of brass. I'll look for some Brasso.

They can be made of nickel-silver as well, but Brasso can still be used effectively on them.

DS,

How about a good Blitz Cloth? Takes me back to Ft. Knox and Ft. Gordon so many years ago. Thanks for the Brasso memory.

I know what you mean, HRL -- I first learned about the joys of Brasso at Naval OCS, where it was invaluable in making those belt buckles shine!
