I just recieved a Pomarico Ruby crystal mouthpiece. After a couple of hours playing, I really like what I am hearing and its response. I tried several different brands of reeds and strengths. The vandoren V12's worked best. I was unable to get clear notes in the upper register. I tried 5 different ligs.
BG Revelation, Vandoren optimum, Vandoren Master, Runyon Plastic and a generic 2 screw. With the Vandoren Master, with only the top screw tight and the other completely loose, I was able to hit all the notes cleanly. So my question is. Should I buy a Pomarico lig at $35.00 and does it work well, or is there some other lig that Pomarico players have found that works well?

For what its worth, on my Pomarico bass clarinet mpc, I get about the same results with either my Winslow or Optimum (parallel rail insert) ligatures holding my Legere #3 reed. Any resonant difference is more noticable between the two ligs on my Grabner CXBS bass mpc (which I prefer for its sound and response). Buffet Prestige low C bass...... Hope this helps a bit.

The Pomarico ligature sits as though it were a screw closer to the bottom of a standard, so it binds the reed lower. It's worth the experiment. I've had good results with it.
If the design is the same as when first introduced, there is a somewhat padded lining that eventually works out with use (took me about three weeks) and it then becomes just the metal ring - still effective though.

Lately I've been using those funky Bois ligatures (a single band of Delrin plastic with a thin internal O-ring touching the moouthpiece) on my Pomaricos. But really, any ligature should work. I submit that if you can't get good response in the upper register with any of those ligatures you've tried (all of them are good products), then the mouthpiece is to blame. It may be pretty good, but it's not quite right. Very common with crystal Pomaricos, in my experience. I've felt it necessary to reface every one I've owned, and that's about ten of them.
