Clarinet and Strings

Hello Folks:

I JUST FOUND MYSELF AN EXCELLENT STRING QUARTET TO PLAY WITH :-) :-) ;-).
That means I will be able to achieve a life-long dream of playing some of my very favorite music.
Naturally, we are going to do the Mozart, Webers, Brahms quintets first. But we are also interested in exploring a little bit deeper, at least in a sight reading mode if nothing else.

Looking on-line at the Lubyan catalog, I see quite a few pieces from major composers. Copland, Glazounov, Hindemith, Prokofieff, Reger have all produced something requiring a clarinet, 4 strings, and sometimes a piano. As well, there are many pieces for clarinet and a subset of the piano/string quarter combination (yes, I know about Beethoven, Brahms and Bruck trios).

My question to you: In the less well-known pieces, which ones are worth investing time and effort? I am particularly interested in getting feedback from musicians with first-hand experience of their suggestions.

Anybody knows where to get this fabulous quintet by Standford?

Good to see you posting again!

A wonderful piece, which I've played for this combination, is Ferrucio Busoni's Clarinet Quintet in D minor. I performed the final movement of it with a string quartet at my high school music teacher's retirement concert (he invited alumni to perform as well as current students) last May. This is an accessible, yet beautiful piece.

Exellency of string people can be identified by judging whether they know
how to harmonize by pure tone not by equal temper.
For example,as clarinet as base tone, perfect 5th higher tone of string should be
played 8 cents higher than equal tempered tone.
If you consider they are excellent, they know this. You have good luck.

Look for the Zemlinsky trio for clarinet cello and piano,
I've played it and it's a first rate music. Zemlinsky was the friend of Mahler and the teacher of Schonberg and also his father in law.
amazing music.
