 Groups in D.C.

Hi All,

I've been lurking for awhile and decided to be brave and jump on in :)

I used to play clarinet in elementary and junior high school many moons ago. I decided to pick it up again a few months ago. So much came back quickly!

I'm through the first Rubanks book and am working my through "Nocturne" by Th. Verney in Rubank's _Concert and Contest Collection._

Do I have enough technique/experience to play 3rd in an amateur community group? I am interested in Renaissance, Baroque and Early Classical music personally, though I only have a 'normal' Bb instrument.

Please forgive this, but I am not as interested in marching band type music. Well, 'interest' isn't the best way to put this. The truth is, that band type music is usually played at top-speed and I'm not anywhere near there yet. LOL

Any ideas of groups in Washington, DC or environs?

Thanks,
Theresa

A few years ago I sat in with the Fairfax Community Band, a very fine group of adult musicians.

The City of Fairfax Band is difficult to get in (at least for clarinets). They have a waiting list, play advanced level music, and have few openings over time. A better bet would be to try Googling local community bands in the DC Metro area. There are scores. Kings Park, Town of Vienna, Falls Church, Rockville, and Alexandria all offer participation without audition (I'm not sure about Rockville).

Recently, The City of Fairfax Band announced it was forming a "sister" community band that requires no auditions. It sounds promising. Think of it as a junior league or JV band. I'm not affiliated with the City of Fairfax Band, but have played with them as a substitute. Here's the announcement:

Thanks William and Glin!

The Fairfax band sounds right up my alley but the rehearsal is on my tightest day in terms of time.

I'll try google again. I used search terms that didn't yield helpful results (amateur orchestra).

Also, Alexandria is closer as I'm on the Hill and traffic has become nightmarish.

On to Google! Thanks again,
T/
