I've come across a 2007 Kalmus arrangement of this and noticed that the
solo cello part was given to the clarinet ? Anyone played this edition? Thanks

Are you talking about a band transcription? I'm not familiar with the 2007 Kalmus edition, but eons ago, when I was first chair in my high school band, we played it. I don't recall who transcribed it for band. I certainly remember playing that solo. I think the arranger also gave the option of having an alto sax play it.
I don't think I've ever heard an orchestral performance of Morning Noon and Night. If you're speaking of an orchestral version, I'm not sure why the cello solo would be given to the clarinet.
Those of you who are regular orchestral performers will be able to verify if I'm right or not, but I get the impression that Von Suppe's music really isn't performed much these days.

It's not a band transcription but an orchestral arrangement edited by McAlister.
I'm not reading through it for a couple weeks but I can't imagine the cellist
would not have the part and would be willing to sit there while a clarinet player
took away the traditional cello part.....

Could you please identify the arrangement completely? I played Morning, Noon and Night In Vienna.....under Forrest McAllister back in the late 30s. in Grade School Band. It was probably the first piece of "classical" music I ever played. Even tho I was not 1st clarinet it was still a challenge. Still love it.

No, it's a Band transcription. No cellos in most (all?) bands. Carl Fischer arr. by Filmore is the same.

The cello solo is also written into the first clarinet part in the orchestral parts, so that the conductor can decide which instrument should play it - cello or clarinet. However I have never known it to be played on the clarinet.

Most of the old "warhorses" were standard fare in school bands years ago where clarinets played the string parts.
