Lots of Clarinets at Sugar Bowl
Author: CarlT

At the time of this post, it is half-time at the Sugar Bowl (Alabama vs. Utah). I thought it interesting that during the first half anyway, every time they showed the Alabama "Million Dollar Band", they seem to feature the clarinet section (must be 6 or 8, at least). I always watch, with interest, the band shots anyway, but normally I hardly ever see any clarinets. Not tonight though.

Just thought it interesting.

Well, with 400 people in the band, having lots of clarinets is a bit of a consequence ;-) .

Like CarlT I always look for clarinets on football games or parades on TV, but I agree that you rarely see them. It was nice to see them tonight on the Sugar Bowl.

I watched also and was pleased to see them, but, wondered why they kept waving their instruments around like batons.Ha ha. When I was that age my clarinet was sacred to me, to be held with care . Ahhhhh youth so full of spirit........It's wondeful to see.

They are most likely playing plastic throw-away clarinets. And if you aren't waving your instrument around in the spirit of the game, you aren't doing your job.

I don't know about the quality of the clarinets, but I recently had a very fine saxophone student accepted at a large East Coast college. As a non music major he was not only given a handsome stipend to play in the marching band and pep band, but also was issued (by the university) a brand new, silver plated Yamaha YAS-62 alto sax.

It seemed like a shame to take such a nice saxophone outdoors in all types of weather, but he said the music department had no concerns about it...GBK

Hello, CarlT, Fine comments, guys, I recall a number of games with Mich. States [ROTC} band, many were very cold, heard a cl crack at one !! In the late '30s we went to Ann Arbor's [U of M] BIG stadium , to march-play a few times for some early pro games, between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. Not great fun !! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

CarlT, I wish I was paying more attention because I love the clarinet but I was too busy watching the cheerleaders. ESP
No sign liner on this one but you can still listen to a little Mozart if you like!
