Furtwangler invented the concept of the modern conductor...his list of world premiers is amazing...

..it seems times have passed and his name only means something to those who have had the chance to listen to his incredible virtuosity as a conductor. He never gave a nazi salute and was the one man many believed even Hitler feared.

However..his recording of Tristan is the greatest single interpretation of that piece. I believe a young Fischer -Dieskau is the Kurneval...

Having watched movies of Furtwangler conducting I especially liked the comment by one person about Furtwangler's snaky downbeat. A perfect description.
I had previously never known that Furtwangler had been put on trial......and that there's a movie about it.
