 Pad size charts?
Author: blazian

Does anybody know if pad size charts exist for various brands of clarinets? From time to time I repad clarinets but not with standard bladder pads. That means I have to measure every time I have a different model or type of clarinet. I want to do an overhaul on a Bundy bass I got from "that auction site" and I'm too lazy to get out my calipers and measure every pad cup so I can order from MusicMedic. Is there an easy way around measuring besides ordering pad sets?

For clarinets, the size (diameter measurement) depends too much on the thickness of the felt, thickness of the cardboard, the degree to which the pad is stepped (at the edge), and the way it is installed . I think most technicans just reach for a likely pad size, check it in a cup, and if it is unsuitable, try another, and maybe another....

I'm under the impression that if you phone Ferree's and give them the name and model of the clarinet they will provide pads that fit......maybe. From a practical standpoint, tho, you would benefit from a stock of pads as per Gordon above.

Ok, so is it the same deal for leather pads too? For the bass clarinet I'm working on I plan to put standard leather pads and not bladder pads.

You'd have problems to find skin pads for bass anyway...
Remove 1 (one) larger pad, and measure pad and cup outer diameters. Now you know the delta between cup outer diameter and pad size; now you can measure the OD of each cup, calculate and order accordingly. No big deal.

The spec diameter of a pad is the largest diameter in its construction. Many pads are stepped, so that the cardboard part that goes inside the key cup is of a smaller diameter.

For (unstepped) leather pads, the spec diameter matches the inside diameter of the pad cup (or minutely larger for a firm but not crushed fit).

However, membrane pads are normally stepped, so that they cover most of the edge of the pad cup. So for the same key cup, the spec diameter for a membrane pad is closer to the OUTSIDE diameter of the key cup.

Just to complicate it, some technicians instal thin leather pads that also slighlty overlap the edge of the key cup. And at least one technician CLAIMS to use stepped leather pads, but I have yet to see these.

They would definitely fit better than if you don't tell them the model of the clarinet [grin]

With leather pads you need the size that fits into the pad cup. You can try Ben's suggestion, but sometimes even measuring the inside of the ky cup and ordering will get you a too large or too small pad. Any other measuring will increase the chance that this happens. But a lot faster if the keys are on the instrument.
