Well I borrowed a mic from a roommate and tried recording all the parts to a quartet that I have. And MAN was it tough!!!! My setup worked fine, and I am a little out of practice, as well as not being too familiar with the music, but the biggest hurdle for me was definitely the timing of the parts! I never realized how much easier it is to play with a chamber group or have someone conduct than to play a part through, and try to keep time with it while playing over it without ANY visual cues whatsoever!
Whew. Just wanted to let you know. It came out ok. I can definitely do better with practice, but I definitely enjoyed playing/listening to how it came out given the circumstances. And I definitely now have the urge to buy my own mic and do some more recording!!!!

One thing that can help is a click track. If you have a headphone feature on a digital metronome it can help you stay at the same speed. The down side is that you have to stay at the same tempo.

It has a clicktrack, but it was "Send in the Clowns" (dificult enough of a song, I know!). So what I did was I recorded a track with myself counting each measure and subdividing in the sections that I wanted to take some (ahem) artistic liberty with the tempo. Then I boosted the volume of that track and tried to play along with myself counting so as to try to keep each part in tempo with how I wanted to play it. STILL tough!!!! But I definitely will be doing more recording! It was fun!
