Interesting article on Clarinet Corner. I have moved mine around and also along the axis, which has helped. Also, the Thum-eez cushion works better for me than others. Hand size must be a significant consideration in where the rest should be placed.

hand size and finger length dictate where to put the thumb rest.
plus each maker seems to put their thumbrests in various locations.
i have small hands and short fingers, I get alot of the same problems that elementary students have on various clarinets. FYI, reach for a RH spatula key and pull off your 3rd ring finger. Loads of fun.
on my Full boehm 1950 Buffet I cannot reach the 5th spatula key !!
(edit) I also add more cork to my thumbrests for positioning rather than reposition the thumbrest itself.

From what I've seen recently, Buffet adjustable thumbrests are STILL being put on too low down the joint. They only have downward adjustment as their highest setting is where a fixed one would normally be, so anyone wanting the thumbrest to be set higher will have to have the base plate fitted higher up the joint by at least 10mm.

I would agree with that. I just bought a new R-13 A few months ago, and I think the adjustable thumbrest is rather pointless because of this.

I have a set of Selmer adjustables which I had installed on my old R13s by my local tech. They do go higher than the original Buffet thumb rests and I like them. I also have a set of Charles Bay Custom thumbrests on my set of Leblanc Concertos and they too adjust as high as you want. Kind of "chunky", however.

has someone notified francis klok about the thumbrest issue? he would probably be the one to push for higher adjuistable thumbrest
