This can be done, but all platers use a little different "mix" and technique. Your keys may not "match" exactly. I checked into replating last June. Was told that the setup and basic plating was pretty straight forward, but there is an art to it that a lot of platers learn through experience. I'm trying to get together with a plater here in Houston and talk him into letting me do some "work" for him (next summer) in exchange for teacing me a few of thebasics and tricks of the trade. I haven't been successful yet. He is an older gentlemen and doesn't like the idea of letting someone "muck" around his plating shop (which is a new state-of-the-art facility). I'll let you know my progress.

Yes, matching is another potential problem. I have a feeling that plating is a process like cold-process roofing. Great cost in getting setupo for a job, once everything is in place & ready to go ... the amount done at once is not (so much) an issue. e.g. the setup is essentially the same, no matter how much is work is done at once. of course, if doing replating for 5 different customers with silver plated clarinets at once, that arguments kinda wanes! :-) mw

A basic setup with chemicals will run about $600 that can handle clarinet keys quite satisfactorily. I have researched it that far. However, local jewelers and platers I've talked with tell me there is an "art" to it that only comes from experience and a lot of knoweledge is handed down to apprentices that is not made public. I do intend to get into this line of work within the next year or two, but want to learn to do it right and not mess around with it.
