 Joe Allard clarinet

I noticed that David Blumberg studied with Joe Allard. I had a day long private sax lesson with him. One of his exercises was fingering a note with the octave key on and forcing it down to the lower octave. The result was a full spectrum lower register. It sounds very much like what David Sanborn does in his playing. ie lots of colour. Did he do any exercises like this for clarinet?

No idea about your question, but for beginners, sax is difficult to hold in the low register, whereas clarinet is absolutely stable. Also, sax plays easily in the second register, whereas clarinet takes conscious effort and causes trouble for beginners.

Thus the equivalent exercise would be playing clarinet in the second register without the register key. Charles Neidich has exercises for exactly that. See

I took lessons with him for 6 years late 60-early 70's...we spent lots of time on over tones as I recall way back then he told me this helps in playing high notes in pitch and helping with the air supply...

By the way you have to get his VSH tape of him well worth the cost he has lots of good ideas on it.

Joe was big on harmonics (he could squeal really high with his voice).

In the video it was pretty evident that his disease (Alzheimers) was affecting him.

Really nice guy - he never got into the dirt that was getting thrown around by 2 of the Clarinet Teachers at Juilliard at the time - said that they would try to get him involved, but it would just weigh him down.

I, too, was saddened to see that tape. The Joe Allard seen there was not the same as the Joe I studied with for many years. Although there are some really great things on that tape, it's really too painful for me to watch.
To say that he was a nice guy is greatly understating the case. He was a Prince of a man and the best teacher I could have had. I basically couldn't play at all when I started with him. He gave me my life. I couldn't have become a musician without him.
And the overtone exercises were (and continue to be) very valuable.

Best Wishes,
Roy

I guess I did not see the things you all say about his Alzheimers on the VHS tape I got several years ago...I only saw the memories of Joe my 6 years with him.... as the years faded I sort of recalled what he did in lesson some what (too young then) and wish I could recall all the things I forgot that I learned from him....

This tape, 30 min long, got all my memories back of all the lessons with him...The Tape for me had me recalled what time had faded away...

After teaching in the public school 34 years, I had forgotten that what I am as teacher is because of him and always wonder the past years where these things came from...I know many of his students recalled everything but that time of my life was complex and I guess my mind placed what I learned in my head flash drive till I saw the tape....

For me its a joy to see the best clarinet teacher that ever lived on tape/DVD and that I was a lucky person to study with him...

Please do not be disturb as if this was not done he would have been lost for ever except for our memories of him which also fade with time...

Count it all joy!!!
