Does anyone know if there are any good clarinet repair manuals out there? I'd like to learn about clarinet repair and I've got a couple of old beat up clarinets that I'd like to tinker with and see what I can do to them.

Dawn, I would have to suggest the "Complete guide to the maintenance and repair of band instruments" by Kenneth A. Mueller. This book goes extremely in depth for clarinet, and other instruments. It even gives detailed descriptions of how to pin cracks. More practical to the beginner, are sections about basics - pads, springs, etc. It also has specifications for key opening heights, although this may not work on some of the older, and "oddball" clarinets. I think that it would be a good investment to anyone who is serious about learning to repair band instruments. Good luck, and have fun! -- Nate Zeien

Mark, if you're referring to Erick Brand's manual - oh, ----. I mean, it has some pretty good (very) basic information and some okay illustrations but, to me it seems way overdue for a total revision. Some indexed topics are nowhere in the book (tool hardening), some present day methods (specifically - pad cup heating) are not even referred to. For a truly basic beginner it might be an all right reference used along with someone teaching you the craft - hands on. Otherwise, on your own, it's pretty haphazard in my estimation. It's so fundamental and superficial in some areas (such as crack pinning, shrink banding, buffing, silver soldering), if you try that on your own with E.B. for your guide, you're asking for a frustrating and discouraging experience.
I admit I haven't looked much, therefore haven't found any but, surely there must be some better repair manuals out there these days.

Ron: I/We (all) learn something every day. I'll take your review as a DEFINITE endorsement of Mueller's book. NOW, where would we buy it? I don't recall seeing it anywhere recently. Yst, I could be BLIND, too. Many thanks. WOW - I'd LOVE to read about pinning cracks. While, I don't want to perform the pinning myself, I want to be informed in my knowledge. mw

My previous comments are totally subjective, Mark. I have an E.B. book and find it useful to jog my memory occassionally but, for any really 'serious' problem, I usually end up calling or going to visit my favorite tech for advice.
I'm certainly willing to offer any advice I can to someone interested in fixing horns. I positively do not know all the answers but often learn by finding out and passing something on. I am not qualified to endorse or not endorse anything, only to offer an opinion. My opinion is not to recommend E.B.s manual to anyone. I'm not totally down on Erick Brand, there is no misinformation in it, I just think the manual is not up to date. I'd like to re-emphasize - this is my personal view... Someone else may feel exactly the opposite. That's fine. I hope somewhere into this thread will come additional information about this (other repair manuals).
In the shop I worked in eons ago was a hardly-ever-looked-at Conn repair manual. As I recall, it was about as useful as Brand's -- for reference to drill and saw blade sizes....
