I like close tip and long facing combination such as Vandoren M13/M14 but want to try other pro-grade mouthpiece. Can someone suggest to me which of the following model and brand having similar feeling of M13/M14 :-
Hite (M41, D, J, H); and
Pyne (PK, JX, M, Bc, Bn).

Wny not write to Dave Hite & Jim Pyne? Sometimes a mouthpiece you wouldn't expect to feel the same based on measurements - does. I think the makers would put you in the right direction really fast.

Another similar mouthpiece is the Gigliotti P facing.

M13 is designed based on Kasper-cicero. Why not add Greg Smith Kasper style mouthpiece in candidates? I have one, It is marvelous: easier articulation(especially staccato),good intonation and above all splendid sound.

I was under the impression that the M13 is a copy of Donald Montanaro's Chedeville. This said, I'm not disagreeing with the idea that another good mouthpiece to try is one by Greg Smith.

Dear Chris and Hiroshi,

I handcraft two styles after the Frank Kaspar mouthpiece - the Chicago vintage(after his mouthpieces dating from c.1930 to 1963) and the Cicero vintage (after his mouthpieces dating from 1963 - c.1973). Generally speaking, the two styles vary mostly in dimensions other than in the facing.

Kaspars had many different facings, his most successful symphonic facings for both styles being being the 11 and perhaps the 13. The blanks Kaspar used were blanks from the Chedeville factory in France but he buffed off the small identifyng marks and then stamped his logo on the front - they were blanks after all and did not play - his hand work is what gave them their life and true personality.

I would say that the Chedeville style that I make more similarly replicates the Henri Chedeville. This is different from the Charles Chedeville due to the shape and depth of the baffle and the tip opening (and to some extent the bore).

I chose to make the Henri style of Chedeville over the Charles because of my sense that the style had a deeper, more beautifully shaped sound posessesing more tonal weight and body without going so far as to sound "tubby" or "thick".

The M series is Vandoren's attempt to machine replicate to some degree their version of a particular (or perhaps a composite of several) Charles Chedeville mouthpiece(s).

I always advise someone playing the M series to audition one of my Henri Chedeville style mouthpieces first.

Of course that's not to say that the Kaspar style Chicago model (with a chamber very much like the Henri Chedeville) would not be appealing too. The Kaspar facings are just a bit more open at and near the tip compared to the Henri Chedeville style.

Gregory Smith
Evanston, Illinois.
