Due to recurring problems on the right thumb (especially maintaining it in the proper position, the one my teacher suggested), I am seriously thinking about replacing my thumb rest with the Kooiman (sp?) or other thumbrest.Neck straps are out of the question, due to switching between Bb and Eb.
Have any of you done this? If so, to what extent did it solve your problems? Which ones are also available for the Eb?

Everything I have heard about Ton Kooiman's thumbrest says it can assist the player in situations where there is a physical problem with the wrist or joints in the hand. Also, in situations where there is discomfort. I have wondered the same as you, have some people used it as a corrective measure for actual hand/finger position?
In that regard, much has been said about Charles Bay's corrective Thumbrest. If I understand the mechanical principle correctly, the Thumb is PREVENTED from going too far to the left. Was Mr. Bay's corrective thumbrest was envisioned for an advancing player? I have heard it mentioned as a corrective device for beginning players.
Mr. Bay is a wonderful resource. He talks to everybody freely, why not give him a call at his shop in CA & discuss with him?
Good luck. mw

Meri - I suggest you "Search the Phorum" as T R's have been much discussed and my handy-dandy [inexpensive] solution is there somewhere. Don

I have a thumb rest by Yamaha, which can be adjusted. It does not correct the thumb position, but lets me hold the clarinet with a much straighter thumb.
The reason I had to do this was a constant pain in the thumb. That pain immediately went away almost completely with the new thumb position. I do not like the idea of developping a permanent demage.
Concerning the correct position of the fingers, I was told that the thumb should face the middle finger. Now my thumb faces the first finger rather. I do not find that this hinders my playing. But I sure know that it is much better for the sanity of the articulations in my thumb.
