 Keeping in shape
Author: Adrianna

I sent my clarinet off this week, for a complete overhaul and I am not expecting it back for about a week or two. The problem is, I do not have another clarinet to play and I really would like to keep my embochure and muscles in shape, while it is away. Therefore, I was wondering if there are exercises to do, that would keep my embochure in reasonable shape. I do have an extra mouthpiece and barrel at my disposal.

Thanks,

Adrianna

Although taking a week or two off will not have long term adverse effects, (your endurance should return pretty quickly), having a back-up clarinet, or second clarinet is something you should consider having in the future.

Aside from having with an instrument available when yours is being serviced, owning a second clarinet will give you some peace of mind in case of the dreaded "performer's nightmare" - a sudden needed repair on the day of performance.

Just purchasing an old Bundy or something equivalent might be something to consider having in the future, not only for the reasons I've outlined, but for also being able to continue playing while your primary horn is being repaired.

If losing your endurance is really concerning you, I would go to the local music store and inquire about renting a clarinet for a few weeks, until yours is fixed.

Better yet - ask around. Many clarinetists own more than one instrument and may be able to lend you one, short term...GBK

Oh, golly, I'd hate to see innocent Adrianna initiated into the dark addiction of compulsive clarinet acquisition! [Evil grin.] Watch out--today a harmless old Bundy as a spare, tomorrow a Signet Special for times when the Bundy isn't quite good enough, next week a Buffet pre-R13, the week after that a seductively interesting, collectible metal Silva-Bet from the 1930s.... Uh-oh! She's doomed!

Hahaha
You just have to constantly tell yourself "I love my clarinet, I love my clarinet, I love my clarinet..." Which I do!!!! :)

Do you have a boy friend?
You could toot on the mouthpiece but make sure no one is home when you do.
When I got married, the first time, I was so concerned about my embouchure that I would practice shaping it and blowing without anything in my mouth while driving on my honeymoon. My wife must have thought I was crazy, I was just paranoid. No wonder I got married a second time. Don’t worry about it, you’ll survive.
By the way, I’m a professional and up to two years ago I never had a back up instrument. I owned only one of each clarinet until two years ago when I decided to by a new Bb clarinet. I bought another bass clarinet this year because it plays so much like the one I’ve been playing for 40 years but decided to sell it when I realized it just sits in my room. I know it’s a good idea to have a second of each clarinet but I’ve managed to get by all these years without. I do keep my clarinets in top playing form though. Also, I would never send my clarinet out because I want to try them at the shop before leaving to make sure the instrument is just the way I want it, not the way the tech thinks I want it. But that’s just me. ESP

yeah ben, at least an A. ;)

Seriously though I would figure that most performing clarinetists have at least 2 Bb's at a minimum or more and a couple of A clarinets too if they play orchestral gigs professionally.

Well, actually there are lip and breathing exercises that can help keep the embouchure muscles strong. Some are articulation exercises, such as tonguing la, la, la, la...etc. Also, exagerated counting from one to one hundred, with a breath after every twenty, and so forth. Pick up a book on vocal exercises that use the lips and resperatory muscles. Should be a way of keeping the chops in shape.

Most elementary schools have school instruments that they loan to beginners. Since it is summer, those will be unused. I would think that if you offer a new box of Rico 2.5's in return for borrowing an instrument for a couple of weeks, both parties would benefit. If you don't have the extra cash for the reeds, offer your time to tutor beginner clarinet sectionals for a couple sessions this fall - you'll have a great time too.
