I just finnished over hauling an old Conn oboe that has the old brass emblem set in the bell. I know its old, but can anyone tell me about what years Conn marked their woodwinds in this manner? On the back of the sections is CONN U.S.A. stamped lightly with a deeper stamping 41DG C292914 LP beneath this. Sounds too good and seems too well made to be a Conn. French stencile?

Willie - I worked up a Conn US, vintage 40-50's? with the brass inset, a quite good one, [blessed] with those !@#$%^&* set-screws, only lost a couple. Back then, I believe Conn's best were just as good as Selmer's and LeBlanc was just coming into prominence. I have the elongated serial no. on a couple of old basses, so think thats the time frame. The only clarinets I have seen the Brass Emblem on were the Model 444's, which was Conn's top-'o-the-line in mid-1940-'s. I (but this is from observing the various Models, e.g. 16, Director, etc)
Artie Shaw was said to have played a 444. I have a 424 from the same era that has no such marking on the Bell; it was circa the same time but has a "plain 'ole bell".
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I remmerber seeing an old black & white glossy of Bennie Goodman taken in the late 20s or early 30s showing a clarinet that had what appeared to be one of these little brass inserts.
