 A Clarinets

I'm a music education major who finds herself in need of an A clarinet. I'm quite happy with my Bb Buffet R13 purchased new in 2007, but for my next clarinet I'm hoping to buy a used model. I got lucky and ended up with a good instrument last year, but I was admonished by my teacher for buying it spur-of-the-moment during spring break without informing him/having someone with more expertise inspect it first. I'd like to do things the right way this time and work with my teacher before spending my money, but I'd like to do the initial searching on my own. I don't know from much outside of Buffet, but I know there are other great instruments out there, so my questions are: what are some general things I should look for in my search? Any particular brands I should keep in mind aside from Buffet for As? How much (here's the important question :)) should I be prepared to spend on a basic professional-level used clarinet? Anything I absolutely should/should not do?

Thanks for all your help!

Sounds to me that you need to ask your teacher what they would like you to look for so you don't get admonished again. There are so many good makes and models out there tday but some people are predjudice against some brands. ESP

Hello,

If your ISP doesn't lie, you live in New York. Do yourself a favor and contact Wojtek Komsta (contact me off-line, if you wish to have his phone or e-mail info). Ask him if he has any leads on good A clarinets. He's very honest and will be glad to work in conjunction with you and your teacher to find the best instrument at the lowest price available! Good luck.

I've been loaned an R13 A clarinet for the Summer from a local university and it plays like a dream. I ran a serial number search and it's from 1977. The only complaint I have about it is that someone bought a 67MM Moennig barrel for it and it makes me terribly flat on the throat tones, everything else seems to be +- 5cents. Go used, I'm sure you can find an older R13 that you will find blows you away.
