 Very sharp Throat notes
Author: kenny

Hi..
I've this Eb RC Prestige clarinet. The problem with this clarinet is that the throat notes are very sharp(Bb is quarter tone sharp) while other notes are in tune. Is this normal and what can be done to compensate it??

Kenny, I would bring this to a repair tech, and see if it needs to be adjusted. If equipment is not the problem, you may just need to get used to the instrument. When I started on efer, I had a tendency to overcompensate at times. The areas that are usually flat on a Bb, may not be so on an efer. Good luck! -- Nate Zeien

It sounds like the Ab,A,Bb keys may be opening too far, but I recommend letting a good tech look at it. A wrong adjustment could comprimise tuning elsewhere.

A good technician can fill in these tone holes to bring down the pitch. Lowering the key openings or "lipping down" to pitch are other options. Venting these notes usually helps. It is good that they are sharp, because flatness is harder to correct.
