 Cracking

Hi, well I know this has probably been asked alot but I was wondering what people do to keep a wood clarinet from cracking. I have been having a lot of trouble with my Buffet. I just played in a pit orchestra this summer and it was so cold down in the pit...my horn would swell so bad that I couldn't even get it apart. And now I noticed a huge crack. I have heard keeping orange peels in the horn keeps it from cracking. What other things can I do? I have had it oiled and such... should I use almond oil? What do you suggest for situations like what happened to me in the pit? Thanks alot!! Nicole

Nicole,
If it's already cracked then you need to get it repaired ASAP - the crack isn't going to get any smaller!

Moving the clarinet from warm to cool/cool to warm isn't helping it, and you have to be very, very careful in warming it up. Even then, a clarinet will crack.

Mark C. is absolutely correct. That is why many orchestra's have a "65 degree rule" (the actual number will vary, and its not just for clarinets, which are cheap compared to stringed instruments). That is, nobody wants to damage their instrument & when you move to an environment where there are extremes, problems are bound to present themselves.
